Gearing up for my fourth bone surgery, I meet people in and out of my house. They narrate how their elderly relatives had bone surgeries and being old, they had to suffer alot. So I am described as "lucky” being "young". Only then I realize, "Oh yah I am so lucky". A naturally made smile comes out from a naturally static face. I practiced alot to get this smile, just for these situations, when the smile has to fight brain and heart.
But, seriously seeing elderly people feeling the after-surgery pain really feel like somehow sharing their pain with me on the next bed. Old age and pain; just needs the family near to keep hopes alive. For any patient more than anything, it’s the mental pain that keeps you busy.
I would reinvent that experience starting tomorrow, feels like getting back to old rest-house. I was unconscious during the first two surgeries, was conscious the third time. Some people say it is weird to be conscious, but seriously I enjoyed it, feeling that something is being done on knee bone and still not feeling any pain – woohoo.
Any fractured patient would admit that the only time one slept well after accident till one recovers to some extent is during the surgery. “Wow you had surgery, you lucky git”. That’s the first time a patient feels “lucky”. The second time of course is when you are called a “young” patient.
So, that’s the story so far as I get ready to become “lucky” and busy again and of course feeling “young” again.
